A French delight

Recommended by a colleague my wife and I visited this restaurant last Friday. In true Parisian fashion there were street-side tables, though more for enjoying a drink than dining. On entering the open, airy restaurant sporting more clean 21stC lines than traditional décor we were warmly greeted and permitted to choose our table. Whilst there were a number of people through the restaurant whilst we were there it is rather a shame that this place was not busier on a Friday evening, people just do not realise what they are missing.A sparkling rosé for madam and a refreshing Pilsner for me whilst we studied the menu and select wine list. An amuse bouche of a pork belly croquet on an aoli dressing with a drizzle of reduced balsamic was crisp and tasty and augured well for the meal to come.

We decided to share a mixed platter as our entrée and were asked to select our choice from salami or jamon, and 2 cheeses with comté and bleu d’Auvergne being the preference over a camembert and a goats cheese. A Chateau Pay la Tour dutifully opened and allowed to breath proved an excellent selection to accompany the meal. The platter was of ideal portion, well presented and of good quality.

After a suitable interlude the mains arrived, for madam a confit of duck leg with green beans “en persillade” and an orange jus was cooked just to perfection and contrary to many confit seen was not at all fatty. The pork belly on a smashed bed of peas and broad bean with a prune and apple chutney was well presented and beautifully tender. Perhaps the one element that was missing was the crunch of a crispy pork skin which had been initially promised in the amuse bouche but was not evident in the main.

Madam could not resist the blueberry and raspberry profiteroles, whilst I reverted to the cheeses though on this occasion replaced the comté with President Camembert. The profiterols were a delight, though perhaps a nuance of chocolate would have paid respect to the traditional variety.

An excellent espresso with a much favoured Calvados brought an end to a great meal.
